The U.S. beef industry has many reasons for optimism about the potential for increasing beef and beef variety meat exports to China. China'’s recent accession to the World Trade Organization lowers tariff rates on imported beef muscle meats and variety meats, low per capita consumption among Chinese consumers means there is good potential for increased consumption, and increasing incomes will allow consumers to purchase more beef. In addition, the Chinese market is highly complementary to the U.S. domestic market and offers potential for additional exports of beef cuts and variety meats that are underutilized in the United States. Observations from a recent trip to China offer insight into the current and potential market for U.S. beef.

Storing processed food products can cause alterations in their chemical compositions. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate carotenoid retention in the kernels of minimally processed normal and vitamin A precursor (proVA)-biofortified green corn ears that were packaged in polystyrene trays covered with commercial film or in multilayered polynylon packaging material and were stored. Atualmente, no Brasil, a embalagem mais usada para tomate continua sendo a caixa de madeira que era usada para transportar querosene na Segunda Guerra Mundial, há meio século, conhecida por caixa ´K´. The effect of packaging material and evaporative cooled storage environment on quality characteristics of tomato and kinnow fruits was evaluated. The experiments were carried out using complete randomized design and significant difference (P≤0.05) was observed among storage conditions and time with the observed parameters viz. plysiological loss in weight, firmness, pH, total soluble solids, acidity, ascorbic acid and overall acceptability in both summer and winter season. Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine a suitable combination of the polysaccharide mesquite seed gum (MSG) and the protein Nile tilapia fish gelatin in the composite MSG/gelatin film for food packaging applications, and to evaluate the effect of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the film. MSG and gelatin were extracted from mesquite seeds and Nile tilapia residues, respectively, and the CNCs from mesquite pods by acid hydrolysis. The MSG:gelatin ratio with the best combination of tensile and barrier properties was used to produce the bionanocomposite films, by adding different CNC contents to the MSG/gelatin dispersion. This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of storage periods on the conservation of Pachyrhizus ahipa roots at different temperatures and packaging materials. The roots were harvested, washed, packed in PVC, plastic bags, without wrappings (control) and stored in polystyrene trays in refrigerators, or cold chambers, or at room temperature. Total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), pH, as well as their ash, lipid, total carbohydrate and protein (dry basis) contents were analyzed. A qualidade pós-colheita das hortaliças orgânicas depende de uma série de procedimentos que se iniciam no plantio, continuam na condução da lavoura, colheita e manuseio após a colheita. Somente com atenção a todos os passos é que se pode manter a qualidade e estender a vida útil dos produtos. Desta forma, deve-se dar atenção ao instrumento de corte da hortaliça, às caixas de colheita, à velocidade da operação, exposição ao sol e calor, remoção do calor de campo, seleção, classificação e embalagem final para transporte ao mercado. Este comunicado técnico apresenta algumas soluções práticas e de baixo custo que ajudam a preservar a qualidade das hortaliças orgânicas e reduzir suas perdas, com benefícios para o produtor e para o consumidor.

The sunflower is among the top five crops in the world for the production of edible vegetable oil. The species displays rustic behavior, with an excellent edaphic and climatic adaptability index, being able to be cultivated throughout Brazil. Seed quality is the key to increasing production and productivity in the sunflower. The objective of this work was to monitor the viability of sunflower seeds with a view to their conservation when stored in different environments and packaging.
